Show like no other! ❤
This theatrical show gave us a chance to look at Sharjah from a different POV and we couldn’t be more grateful to the performers and production team for giving us an opportunity to relive our history. Sadly, all good things must come to an end and so did ‘Narratives of the Place’ that was held for the very last time on Saturday night at Al Majaz Amphitheatre.
Organised by Sharjah Government Media Bureau, the theatrical extravaganza showcased an important window to a crucial historical event in Sharjah and set the tone for the remainder of the scenes that narrate the emirate’s extraordinary story of achievements over the decades.
The opening scene puts into perspective the might and advanced arsenal of the invaders’ fleet, which was chronicled in detail by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, in his book, Khorfakkan’s Resistance Against the Portuguese Invasion of September 1507. Keep scrolling down to read more about the story!
In September 1507, when the coastal town of Khorfakkan was invaded, its people rose in unison to bravely resist and defend their homeland. Over 500 years ago, the courageous and strong-willed residents of the town had put up a valiant resistance, and the stories of their sacrifices and heroism were passed down the generations, keeping alive the spirit of this glorious victory.
Six ships attacked Khorfakkan port as part of a strategic plan to gain control over trade routes along the coastal cities and countries. With the limited arms at their disposal, Khorfakkan’s residents bravely defended their city for two days until the invaders were forced to retreat into the sea. To commemorate the resilience and heroic actions of the people of Khorfakkan in the 16th century, the Ruler of Sharjah ordered the construction of a ‘Resistance Monument’ in the city.
Implemented by Multiple International in collaboration with ‘The 7 Fingers’, the live show incorporated 10 creative art forms, and combined poetry, narration, music, theatrical performance, acrobatics, light art, and 3D visual scenes, amongst others.
Furtherly, the production featured international music with strong Arabic and Emirati undertones . The show included two original songs, especially written and composed for the ‘Narratives of the Place’, these include the title song, ‘Sard Al Makan’, written by Emirati poet Ali Al Khawar, and ‘A Hymn to Sharjah’, written by poet Ismail Al Rifai and composed by Philippe Skaff.
At last, the grand finale also revealed a fabulous picture mosaic in the shape of the number ‘50’ representing the emirate’s 50 years of achievements and featured the photographs of thousands of people who have been a witness to or a partner in the cultural renaissance of Sharjah over the last five decades.
So proud!
