Wow!
This exhibition shines a light on the globally adored and respected Lebanese, Gibran Khalil Gibran, celebrating his life and invaluable contributions as a visual artist with a display of 34 of his original works at Sharjah’s House of Wisdom!
The show, titled A Window to the Soul: Gibran Khalil Gibran, was inaugurated on Sunday by Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah.
The artist, better known as Kahlil Gibran, was born in Bsharri during the Ottoman Empire in 1883 and moved to the United States with his family at a young age. In 1904 he began exhibiting his drawings while also pursuing literary interests, which led to the publication of his first Arabic book in 1905.
The exhibition is divided into the following thematic sections: A Window; Connections: Roots and Branches; Formation; Faces Study; Red Chalk Medium; Perspective Method; and, finally, The Soul.
A Window to the Soul includes 15 never-before-seen works, as well as the artist’s oil, gauche, and watercolour works, as well as his charcoal sketches.
There are also four manuscript notebooks, a watercolour set, and an easel on display, as well as some of Gibran’s personal belongings.
The galley and plate proofs of his best-known book, The Prophet, are also on display. The collection of prose poetry fables was published in 1923 by the Lebanese-American poet, and it has never been out of print since. Gibran’s writing frequently explores ideas of mysticism, as well as natural beauty and its place in a modernizing world. He died at the age of 48 in New York City in 1931.
The exhibition is co-presented by the Gibran National Committee and the Gibran Museum, and is sponsored by the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry and supported by the Barjeel Art Foundation.
A Window to the Soul: Gibran Khalil Gibran is on display for 4 months, until Thursday, January 6, 2022.
