If art is something you’re into then this exhibition is just for you! Aref El Rayess (1928 – 2005), a prolific Lebanese artist, presents over five decades of work in his first major institutional exhibition.
The exhibition includes a diverse range of works in painting, drawing, sculpture, and collage, all of which reveal the rich and complex artistic practice of this essential Arab modernist.
El Rayess was a restless traveller, and his work often represents the places and times in which he lived and worked. From his early works in Lebanon and Senegal, to his travels and studies in Europe and the United States, and finally to his return to the Arab world, the artist captured the spirit of the world around him in a body of work that is grounded in his deep inner-self.
While much of his work tends to reflect his time’s political struggles—the Algerian War of Independence, the Lebanese civil war—the artist was also an active participant of the engaged Lebanese art community, teaching, writing, organizing, and participating in conferences and exhibitions on politics and arts in the Arab World.
This exhibition will take place until the 7th of August at Sharjah Art Foundation! Book your tickets HERE
