An AMBER Alert is a system that quickly alerts the public to child abduction. The system was first used in the United States in 1996 and has since been adopted in other countries.
Earlier this week, Instagram announced they are launching Amber Alerts on the social media platform, allowing their users to be made aware of missing children around their area/region as well as share news with other users too.
The alerts will include details of the missing child, including the picture, description and location of the suspected abduction. The alert is designed to be shared by users to help raise awareness so the missing children can be found with the power of social media.
Those in nearby areas will be able to see an Amber Alert in their Instagram feed. The alert will offer important details like name, age, a photo, and a description.
The alert may also include the location of the abduction, which could help locate the child. Plus, there is the added benefit that Instagram users will be able to share the alert with their friends, truly harnessing the power of social media.
Instagram intends to use the user’s city, IP address and location services to ensure the alerts are targeted correctly.
The Amber Alerts feature was developed in partnership with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, the National Crime Agency in the United Kingdom, and many similar organizations across the globe.
Share this with your family and friends to let them know about this new feature that might save someone.
