Dubai is now one step closer to getting driverless taxis out on the roads!
In collaboration with General Motors-backed Cruise, The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) will start operating two Chevrolet Bolt electronic vehicles that will help create digital maps for future self-driving vehicles.
The vehicles will initially be deployed on Jumeirah streets and driven by ‘specialist drivers’, where Cruise’s technology will use a high-resolution map of the physical environment created using mapping vehicles equipped with sensors including Lidar (Light detection and ranging) and cameras.

The process is a prelude for the launch of the actual driverless taxi and e-hail services by 2023, making Dubai the first city in the world to commercially operate Cruise self-driving vehicles outside the US.
That aimed at converting 25% of total trips in #Dubai into self-driving transport trips across different modes of transport by 2030.

RTA also plans on increasing the deployment of driverless vehicles gradually up to 4,000 vehicles by 2030, which is part of their plans of transforming 25% of total trips in Dubai into various self-driving transport means also by 2030!
