Here’s All You Need to Know About Applying for UAE’s Juvenile Work Permit

A couple of days ago, UAE announced the decision to allow teens of age 15 and above to get a part-time job, in order to enhance their skills and gain work experience to feel more prepared for their future.

So, if you’re wondering how you can apply, here is all you need to know about getting a juvenile work permit:

It is important to know only those who are aged 15 and over can apply for a juvenile work permit and students above the age of 12 and below the age of 18 can only apply for work experience and/or summer work placements in the private sector – this is only if Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation grants the teenager a training permit.

You can access the form on the Ministry’s website HERE or on Wajjehni apps; It can also be found at Tas’heel service centres however, written consent of the pupils’ parent or guardian is necessary for this.

What will working for teens would look like?

  •  Teenagers’ working hours should not exceed six hours per day.
  • They are entitled to breaks totalling one hour per day.
  • Working overtime or on holidays is not allowed.
  • The Labour Law prohibits youth from working at night in industrial enterprises and undertaking hazardous or strenuous jobs.
  • Those with work permits can be hired to work on projects for up to six months. There are also work permits for those who wish to work fewer hours over a year.

The documents you will need to apply:

  • Copy of teenager’s valid passport
  • Copy of teenager’s valid residence visa
  • Copy of parent or guardian’s valid passport
  • Copy of valid residence visa for the parent or guardian
  • The Application form
  • Copy of part-time contract
  • Colour photograph with a white background of the teenager
  • Valid certificate of fitness issued from competent health official
  • Written consent from the teenager’s parent or guardian

The terms & conditions of the juvenile work permit:

  • The teenager must have a valid residence visa stamped in their passport if they are a foreign national
  • The teenager’s relatives must also have a valid residence visa
  • Approval of the teenager’s parent or guardian must be obtained
  • The teenager must be medically fit
  • The teenager’s age must not be below 15 years and not exceed 18 years
  • The permit shall be valid for a period not exceeding one year
  • Work to be assigned to the applicant must not be among that mentioned in the ministerial decree No. 1189 of 2010 in accordance with the enclosure
  • The licence of the establishment submitting the application must be valid and free from any violations
  • The establishment must have an e-signature card at the ministry

If you’re wondering if there is any cost involved, the request for initial approval of the new electronic work permit costs Dh100, and once approved, the permit will cost Dh500.

Oh and teens, both Emiratis and expats, aged between 15 and 18 years old are allowed to work as long as they are residing within the UAE!
