“Everyone loves a conspiracy.”
Dan Brown said those words. And he should know, he’s made a living out of writing about conspiracy theories. Conspiracy theories, for the uninitiated, are alternate theories as to what happened in the background of an event. Some of them are true, like MKUltra and some of them are just plain stupid(read ‘The Earth is Flat’). But, one thing we can agree on is that they are really entertaining. And Hollywood has picked up on this too. So, here are some conspiracy theory movies for you to check out this weekend. Some of them are related to real events while others are purely fictional, but they’re all really fun.
The Post
Starring Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks, The Post tells the story of how a newspaper uncovered the decade long secret of the Vietnam War. The movie deals with the fallout from this secret and how the American Media at the time came together to fight against a corrupt government. Oh, some guy called Steven Spielberg directed it too.
Snowden
Edward Snowden. Need we say anymore?
Well, in case we do, this is the true story of WikiLeaks founder and former NSA analyst, Edward Snowden.
JFK
JFK, the only movie on this list to actually have had a real-world effect, this Oliver Stone directed flick deals with the infamous assassination of John F. Kennedy. Starring Kevin Costner, the aftermath of this movie saw Congress in the US reopening the investigation into the events of November 22nd, 1963.
Enemy of the State
Enemy of the State told us about NSA long before Snowden did, and with Will Smith at the helm, they told it with a lot more style too. Witness how any normal citizen can get embroiled in a conspiracy by being at the wrong place at the wrong time.
The Pelican Brief
Starring Denzel Washington and Julia Roberts, The Pelican Brief shows us the shadowy working of corporations and the role they play in the government and in our daily lives. It is based on a book by John Grisham.
The Manchurian Candidate
The Manchurian Candidate follows the story of how MKUltra came to be, except this time its a Multinational Conglomerate doing the experimenting. Starring Denzel Washington, Meryl Streep and Liev Schreiber this movie focuses more on the human element of being embroiled in a conspiracy, rather than the big picture.
