Celebrities, influencers, and government officials gathered in Al Wasl Plaza on Wednesday night to celebrate the opening of the Women’s Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai.

The pavilion, the first in more than a century dedicated to women at an expo, honors women’s significant — and often undervalued — contributions to society’s advancement.

The exhibits inside the centrally located pavilion, themed “When women thrive, humanity thrives,” highlight the issues women still face, particularly post-pandemic. To accelerate progress, the pavilion aims to identify and address current barriers and biases against women.

The UAE has already implemented several measures to move the country closer to gender equality, including a 2018 law requiring women to be paid the same as their male counterparts. As a result of this progress, the UAE is ranked 18th in the world and first in the region for female empowerment, according to the UN’s Gender Inequality Index.

Ms Al Hashimy and Mona Al Marri, director general of the Government of Dubai Media Office, delivered speeches at the Expo event, which also featured performances by Sudanese-American slam poet Emi Mahmoud and ballet dancers Diana Vishneva and Denis Savin.

Wow, this truly touched our hearts!
