Meet Buffy, The Only Service Dog in US to Detect COVID-19 By Sniffing

Buffy is a two-year-old service dog in Sarasota, USA being trained by hospital staff to sniff and detect Covid-19 samples. She does this by walking around the hospital’s lobby and sniffing the visitors’ shoes and if Buffy thinks they’re positive with COVID-19, she would lay down in front of them or in the opposite just walk past the person she just sniffed.

Buffy was trained in a scent detection pilot program at Southern Guide Dogs and was screening 20-40 people a day that were visiting the Doctors Hospital, the only hospital in the United States using a service dog to detect the virus.

The hospital’s CEO and Buffy’s owner, Bob Meade is the one who started bringing her to work as much as he could and continues to practice with her at home using shoes and deactivated COVID samples in his garage. Good girl, Buffy works at the hospital three times a week and during her off-time, she is a normal, sweet and loving dog who also stays back at the hospital for the patients’ and employees emotional support.
