Being fully vaccinated against Covid-19 is now required for performing Umrah and praying at the Grand Mosque in the Saudi holy city of Mecca, according to the kingdom’s Hajj and Umrah Ministry.
The ministry also stated that permits for Umrah or lesser pilgrimage, praying at the Grand Mosque, and visiting the Prophet Muhammed’s Mosque in Medina are only issued to vaccinated worshippers. The new condition will have no effect on the exempted categories listed in the Tawakkalna health app.
Worshippers who have previously issued related permits without receiving two doses of vaccines are required to obtain the second dose within 48 hours of the date of the permit in order to avoid its cancellation, according to the ministry.
Earlier this month, Saudi authorities increased the number of pilgrims permitted to perform Umrah from 70,000 to 100,000 per day. Meanwhile, the number of Muslims permitted to pray at the Grand Mosque has increased to 60,000 per day. They must obtain permits ahead of time.
