The most beautiful and peaceful green space in the Emirate is dedicated to learning the importance of and the link between Islam and preserving the environment. Sharjah’s Islamic Botanical Garden is the first of its kind in the Middle East, featuring over 50 herbs and plants mentioned in the Holy Quran and Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him).
This idea came from the Ruler of Sharjah, His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi in collaboration with UNESCO in 2006, which took botanists another three years to collect the indoor and outdoor plant species, and some of them were grown from seeds or imported from various locations around the globe.
Each exhibit is labelled with the plants’ name in Arabic and English, with smart screens installed for visitors to read more info on each plant’s properties, uses, benefits and more.
Some of the plants displayed at the Botanical Garden are pomegranates, figs, banana, and herbs such as basil, citron. They produce henna as well!
The garden has much more facilities that you can enjoy such as along with taking a scroll through the park, you can visit the cafè at the site serving Arabic cuisine using fresh produce from the garden or grabbing a book from the library to have a read on all things about nature.
The Islamic Botanical Garden is part of the Desert Park in Sharjah where you can also visit a number of other attractions including a breeding centre for an endangered animal, a children’s farm and of course, Arabia’s Wildlife Centre.
