Woah! A Statue Of A Mythical Creature From The Roman Empire Was Found in Mleiha!

A statue of a mythical creature dating back to the time of the Roman Empire was recently discovered in Mleiha, Sharjah.

The Sharjah Archaeology Authority (SAA) stated that the artefact is a bronze statue of a mythical creature with eagle wings, a lion’s head, and a huge bird’s foot with claws.

It is most likely to be from the first century AD, according to the Sharjah Media Office.

This was retrieved in Mleiha and if you didn’t know yet, Mleiha is a UNESCO World Heritage site where multiple archaeological discoveries have been made.

This is what we know about the artefact so far:

According to the experts at Sharjah Archaeology Authority, the statue indicates the existence of a trading network between Mleiha, a known centre of trade and commerce on the Arabian Peninsula, and ancient empires.

The shape of the mythical creature was depicted in many Roman artworks, including in architecture, decorations, wall panels, furniture and jewellery. For example, the statue was one of three that were of similar shapes that formed a base to hold a large bowl to burn incense.

Hmmm Interesting!
