Yousuf Al Matrooshi, the only swimmer representing UAE, led the delegation as the flagbearer at the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics Games and he is making his Olympic debut when he competes in the 100m freestyle event.

The opening ceremony was attended by Shehab Ahmed Al Fahim, Japan’s UAE Ambassador, and Azza bint Suleiman, Assistant Secretary-General of the National Olympic Committee for Administrative and Financial Affairs. They were among the less than 1,000 VIPS that were allowed to attend the ceremony.

Earlier this month, it was announced that there would be no spectators attending the ceremony and the rest of the Olympics games due to the rising Covid-19 cases in Japan. The 68,000 seats at the Olympic stadium will be left vacant and no mass gathering will take place.

The parade held with about 5,700 athletes from all around the world, was far less than the usual numbers the country hosting the Olympics is used to seeing. It is said that there would have been an estimated loss of around $1.5 billion in broadcasting revenues had the Games been cancelled

Thankfully, the event is going ahead and the Games have already begun.

We can’t wait to see what our team will be able to achieve this month, regardless of what happens, we are proud of you Team UAE!
