Portugal Becomes The First Country to Ban Employers From Contacting Their Staff After Work!

Why didn’t no one think of this before?

Portugal has become the first country to officially ban employers from contacting their employees in any form including calling, messaging and texting, after work hours! This initiative is part of the efforts to improve the work-life balance in response to ‘work from the office’ expanding to ‘work from home’ due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The new rules will, of course, have their limits – The new rule will not apply to companies with more than ten staff members and fines will be paid if they violate their employees’ “right to rest”, and according to the new law, “The employer must respect the privacy of the worker,” including periods of rest and family time!

Among other measures being placed, employers will have to compensate home-based employees for expenses suffered by telecommuting, such as electricity and internet bills along with employers being forbidden from monitoring their employees working from home.

There is some good news for parents of young children as well! They now have the right to work from home without having to arrange it in advance with their employers, up until their child turns eight years old.

This really is a game changer!

Do you think UAE should implement this rule too?
